What Is AdBlue?
AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid — about 32.5% urea in demineralised water. It is not a fuel, and it is not an additive you put in with your diesel. It lives in its own tank, and its only job is to clean up what comes out of the exhaust.
What it actually does
Modern diesel engines run Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). The engine draws AdBlue from its separate tank and injects a fine spray into the hot exhaust stream. There it breaks down into ammonia, which reacts across a catalyst with the nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust and converts them into ordinary nitrogen and water vapour.
NOx is the pollutant that emissions standards target hardest, and SCR is how manufacturers meet Euro 5, Euro 6 and equivalent limits without sacrificing fuel efficiency. That is the trade: the engine can be tuned to burn efficiently, and the exhaust gets cleaned up afterwards.
The quality specification matters more than people expect. AdBlue is made to ISO 22241, and SCR systems are extremely sensitive to contamination — dust, fuel, oil or the residue in a container used for something else can damage an expensive catalyst. Buying to spec and handling it cleanly is not fussiness.
Does your fleet need it?
If your vehicles or plant have SCR, yes — and there is a simple physical check. Look for a second filler cap, usually blue, next to the diesel filler. If it is there, that vehicle needs AdBlue. Most current trucks, and a great deal of modern construction and agricultural plant, do.
What happens if you run out
This is the part worth understanding before it happens. Running low is not a warning you can work around:
- Warnings first. The dash flags a low level well before it becomes critical.
- Then derating. The engine management system progressively cuts power. The vehicle still moves, but it will not do the job properly.
- Then no restart. Once the tank is empty, the system will typically prevent the engine restarting until AdBlue is added.
That is designed behaviour, not a malfunction — it exists so the emissions system cannot simply be ignored. From an operator's point of view the consequence is blunt: an empty AdBlue tank strands the vehicle wherever it happens to be. It is an availability problem long before it is a compliance one.
How much will you use?
A reasonable planning figure is 3–5% of diesel consumption, varying with the engine, the load and the duty cycle. The practical implication is that you do not need to forecast AdBlue separately — if you know your diesel volumes, you can size AdBlue as a proportion of them, and the two naturally stay in step.

Where the crossover sits depends on your actual consumption, not a rule of thumb — and we would rather work it through with you than push you to bulk before it pays.
Storing it properly
- Shelf life around 12 months when sealed and kept cool, and often longer in good conditions.
- Heat is the problem. Sustained high temperatures break the urea down. Keep it out of direct sun — a real consideration through a Melbourne summer.
- Freezing is not. AdBlue freezes at about −11°C and thaws unchanged; vehicle systems are built to cope with it.
- Contamination is the real risk. Dedicated equipment only. Never decant through a funnel, pump or container that has held fuel, oil or anything else.

Does my fleet need AdBlue?
If your trucks, plant or machinery use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emissions systems, yes. The giveaway is a separate filler cap — usually blue — alongside the diesel filler. Most modern diesel vehicles built to Euro 5, Euro 6 and equivalent standards use SCR, so any reasonably current fleet will need a reliable AdBlue supply alongside its diesel.
What happens if a truck runs out of AdBlue?
The engine management system will progressively derate the engine — cutting power — and once the tank is empty it will typically prevent the vehicle restarting until AdBlue is added. This is designed behaviour, not a fault: it stops operators simply ignoring the emissions system. In practical terms an empty AdBlue tank strands the vehicle, which is why running out is an operational problem rather than a compliance one.
How much AdBlue does a vehicle use?
As a rough rule, AdBlue consumption runs at roughly 3–5% of diesel consumption, though it varies with the engine, the duty cycle and how hard the vehicle works. A useful planning approach is to size your AdBlue supply as a proportion of your diesel usage rather than tracking it separately — if you know your diesel volumes, you can estimate AdBlue reasonably well.
Should we buy AdBlue in bulk or in drums?
It depends on volume. Packaged drums and IBCs suit smaller fleets and occasional use, with no infrastructure required. Bulk delivery into an on-site tank suits fleets getting through meaningful volume — lower cost per litre, less handling, and no stack of empty containers to dispose of. The crossover point is a genuine calculation rather than a rule of thumb; we are happy to work it through with you honestly.
How long does AdBlue last and how should it be stored?

Heat is the enemy: sustained high temperatures cause the urea to break down. Contamination is the real risk, because SCR systems are extremely sensitive to impurities — never decant AdBlue through equipment used for anything else.
