Is Diesel Flammable?

Diesel is combustible, not flammable — a distinction that sounds like semantics and is not. Its flash point is above 61.5°C, so at normal temperatures it does not give off enough vapour to ignite. Petrol's flash point is around −43°C. That gap is why you can store diesel on a worksite in ways you would never store petrol.

What "flash point" actually means

A liquid does not burn. Its vapour burns. The flash point is the temperature at which a liquid produces enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with the air above it. Below that temperature there is simply not enough vapour for a flame to take hold, no matter what you put near it.

Diesel also has an auto-ignition temperature of roughly 210°C — the point at which it ignites with no spark or flame at all. That property is exactly what a diesel engine exploits: compress air until it is hot enough, inject atomised fuel, and it lights without a spark plug. Which is the clue to where the real risk lies.

Where diesel genuinely does become dangerous

"Harder to ignite" applies to a body of cool liquid in a tank. Change the conditions and the picture changes sharply:

  • Heated fuel. Warm diesel past its flash point — near hot work, an exhaust, a fire already underway — and it produces ignitable vapour like any other fuel.
  • Mist or spray. A pinhole leak in a pressurised line atomises diesel into a fine mist with an enormous surface area. Airborne like that, it ignites far more readily than it ever would in a tank.
  • Soaked into materials. This is the one that catches people out. Diesel absorbed into a rag, overalls, lagging or absorbent granules acts as a wick, and will burn readily. A pile of diesel-soaked rags in a corner is a real fire risk, not a theoretical one.
  • Vapour in a confined space. Even limited vapour can accumulate to an ignitable concentration in a poorly ventilated pit, bund or tank interior.

Storing diesel safely on site

In Australia, AS 1940 — The storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids is the standard that governs this. It is worth reading properly if you hold fuel on site, but the practical shape of a compliant setup is straightforward:

  • A purpose-built tank. Designed and certified for fuel storage — not a repurposed vessel.
  • Secondary containment. A self-bunded tank has a second outer wall, so a leak from the inner tank is captured between the two rather than reaching the ground. It is a tank within a tank, and it removes the need to build a separate concrete bund.
  • Distance from ignition sources — hot work areas, switchboards, plant that runs hot.
  • Away from drains and waterways. The environmental exposure from a spill often exceeds the fire risk, and the penalties reflect that.
  • Stable, level ground with impact protection where vehicles or plant move nearby — bollards are cheap.
  • Clear labelling and signage, so anyone on site knows what is in the tank, including emergency services.
  • A spill kit and the right extinguisher kept near the tank, not in a distant store — see spill response equipment below.

If there is a spill

A serious incident means evacuating the site in line with the occupational health and safety requirements that apply to it. For a spill that does not pose a threat to safety, the guidance published by EPA Victoria on liquid storage and handling sets out the general principles below. They are worth reading before you need them, because the first few minutes decide whether this stays a contained problem or becomes an environmental one.

  1. 1. Stop the spill at its source — if it is safe to do so.
  2. 2. Call 000 immediately if the spill involves a hazardous substance, such as a flammable or toxic one, or if you suspect the spill will escape to the environment.
  3. 3. Contain it. If the spill is not contained, use spill control and absorbent materials over the entire spill area — again, if it is safe to do so.
  4. 4. Cover the spill during rainfall where possible, so rain does not compromise the clean-up.
  5. 5. Dispose of the clean-up materials properly. Absorbent materials and any other equipment used to clean up a spill need appropriate disposal — and diesel-soaked absorbent is itself a fire risk.
  6. 6. Treat any wash-water as contaminated. Water used to clean up or decontaminate after a spill has to be handled as contaminated waste water, not sent down a drain.
  7. 7. Record and report it. Log every spill and make sure it reaches management.
  8. 8. Investigate the cause and put precautionary action in place so a similar incident is less likely.

Never wash a spill into the stormwater system — no matter how small. Hosing diesel away does not make it go away; it turns a contained incident into an environmental one, and the penalties reflect that.

Spill response equipment and infrastructure

None of the steps above work without the right gear, in the right place. EPA Victoria's guidance separates this into the infrastructure built into a site and the equipment kept ready on it.

Infrastructure may include:

  • Site containment systems — so a release is caught at the boundary of the area rather than leaving it.
  • Isolation valves on drains — the difference between a spill that reaches stormwater and one that does not.
  • Retention pits — somewhere for a contained volume to go.

Response equipment should be kept in accessible locations, and may include:

  • Fire extinguishers.
  • Spill kits containing absorbent material appropriate to the type of substance used on site.
  • Recovery drums or containers — an appropriate number, and compatible with the substances that may be put in them.
  • Neutralisers for any acids or bases held on site.
  • Equipment to block stormwater inlet drains, and booms.
  • Portable pumps and retention tanks.
  • Safety equipment for the people involved.

The recurring theme is accessibility. A spill kit locked in a store on the other side of the yard is not a spill kit; it is an inventory item. Keep it where the fuel is.

Is diesel flammable?

Technically diesel is classified as combustible rather than flammable. Its flash point — the temperature at which it gives off enough vapour to ignite — is above 61.5°C, well above normal ambient temperature. Petrol, by contrast, has a flash point around −43°C and gives off ignitable vapour constantly. Diesel is genuinely harder to ignite in bulk liquid form, but "harder to ignite" is not "safe", and once it is burning it carries a great deal of energy.

What is the flash point of diesel?

Australian automotive diesel has a minimum flash point of 61.5°C. That is the threshold that puts it in the combustible category rather than the flammable one for classification and storage purposes. The auto-ignition temperature — where it will ignite with no spark at all — is far higher, around 210°C.

Can diesel catch fire from a spark?

Bulk liquid diesel at ambient temperature will usually not ignite from a spark, because it is not producing much vapour. But that changes completely if the diesel is heated, atomised into a mist, or soaked into a rag, insulation or clothing. Absorbed into a porous material, diesel behaves much more like a wick, and it will ignite readily. Diesel-soaked rags are a genuine fire risk and should never be left in a pile.

Is diesel safer to store than petrol?

Yes, meaningfully so. The higher flash point means diesel does not maintain an ignitable vapour cloud above the liquid the way petrol does, which is why petrol storage is regulated far more tightly. That is one reason on-site bulk fuel storage is common for diesel fleets and rare for petrol ones. It still needs proper storage — the risk is lower, not absent.

How should diesel be stored safely on site?

In a purpose-built, clearly labelled tank designed for fuel, with secondary containment — a self-bunded tank has a second wall built in, so a leak is captured rather than reaching the ground.
